Aldi Crochet Kits, Blog

It’s been a while…

As I open my WordPress app, I realise that I don’t know my way around anymore and it just proves to me that it has been a very, VERY long time since I have given this little space any form of attention. So, hopefully this little post will begin to rectify that somewhat!

This lovely Saturday afternoon I want to write about this adorable ‘Crochet your own Lion’ kit from Aldi that I have recently finished. Throughout this particular project, I experienced a very much love/hate relationship. I am very pleased with the end result and I am also very glad that I continued to work on him, even though he caused such grief!

As per usual, this kit contained everything you needed to make your very own crochet lion. Including all the yarn, stuffing, a metal crochet hook and a darning needle. The yarn in this kit was super soft and really easy to crochet with too! An absolute bargain for £3.99!

The first issue I faced was the legs. I made the first leg and it looked good to me, then I made the second leg and it looked completely different to the other one. I figured I must have miscounted the stitches, which caused the leg to become misshapen and as you can see from the picture on the box, the legs are quite uniform and shaped together. I finally sorted that and it turns out I had miscounted – which is what you get when you become too engrossed in watching The Office whilst following a pattern!

Once I had completed the rest of the lion, I was onto the various features such as the nose, mouth and mane. The pattern for the mane made very little sense to me. (I am sure it is a problem with me and not the pattern itself!) I am not sure if it was the way it was written but it used a phrase which I’d never seen before ‘an empty crochet’. Have any of you ever come across this before? Please do let me know if you have. As you can see from the image below, my lion did end up with a mane. I just had to improvise it a bit! I did some crochet chain stitches around the head and then just kept increasing the stitches until it looked presentable. It doesn’t have that same wavy shape of the picture on the box, but he does have a mane…so I guess that is a win!

Once I had completed it, my partner did point out that he thought that I’d made him look a lot angrier than the one on the box. Maybe he was angry that it took me so long to finish making him! Or maybe I was angry at him for the very same reason!!

Next on my list of crochet projects is my one remaining Aldi crochet kit and it is a sloth! I am hoping that I will not have any issues with this guy and bring him to life a little bit quicker than this lion. Although…he’d probably prefer I took my time, you know, with him being a sloth!

I hope you are all staying safe during this uncertain time.

Thank you for reading!

  1. Aw I think he looks really cute. I can crochet but I am hopeless at amigurumi, so I admire anyone who can bring these patterns to life! As for WordPress, there have been quite a few updates and it is hard to keep up with what’s new sometimes.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. Amigurumi is definitely a different form of crochet to everything else I think. It took me ages to get to grips with how to read a pattern and follow it. Maybe it is the WordPress updates that are confusing me then! Thank you, Jasmin

  2. I’m still completing mine after taking a month long break. I’m not sure it was the best choice for my first ever time crocheting, as I basically had to learn online before I could start! Everything has gone a bit wrong, but I’ve just decided he’s going to look like whatever he (eventually) comes out as. I’m also glad that I’m not the only one who’s looking at the mane instructions like they’re written in a completely different language!

    1. That’s okay, the first amigurumis that I ever made, looking back now, I am fairly sure that they were all inside out! I still have no idea what the mane instructions on this one were trying to do! I am glad you’re getting there with it though. 🙂
